Another pictureless update/book review

The computer is up and running, but Ross loaded a possibly temporary operating system, so I'm not going to mess with my pictures and stuff until he knows for sure what he is doing. At least I can get online from my own living room now!

I finished my fourth book for the year, The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen, on Sunday and I'm still struggling with what I think about it. I've been wanting to read it for years, and I really don't know why. The one word that most came to mind while reading it was pretentious. The story itself, the characters, the writing style, pretty much all of it. It was a decent, fairly quick read, but not a book I ever need to read again. While reading I kept trying to figure out which character I liked the most. I couldn't, but my list of who was the most unlikable character was rather long. The people were just sour and negative. I completely understand why this book got the critical acclaim it did, its fits into that critical darling role. It is obvious the author is of that jaded, dreary generation that feels the need to be at odds with the world and society. I guess the book just didn't fit in with the space in which I'm trying to live my life. But at the same time, it is always good to get different perspectives. I would suggest this book if dysfunction and drama are the order of the day.

Boo to computers!

I'm just here briefly to explain my lack of updates. Our computer crashed last Thursday (yes, its been over a week) and the only computer I have access to is limited and I don't want to upload pictures on it. So therefore, no updates. But once our computer is fixed I will have some great photos from Strawberry Festival and St. Patrick's Day and probably more. Please keep your fingers crossed it gets fixed soon! I can't take it much longer!

My "typical" day

I've been reading Kelly's blog for some time now and am really enjoying it. She is quite funny and her daughter, Harper, is adorable. She is a strong Christian, so its nice to see her put her faith in action.

Every Friday she does a Show Us Your Life post, and I thought I would finally participate for once. Today the post was about your typical day (although with a 2 year old is anything typical?)...so here's mine.

Quinn is usually my alarm clock, unless we have to go somewhere early. He will sleep until about 8:30 give or take a 1/2 hour. I know, I'm blessed. We get up and change diaper (his, not mine) and then go downstairs and eat breakfast. This can take some time, as Q is a bit of a pokey eater. Anyway, after breakfast we go back upstairs and either get ready to go out if that's what we're doing, or play in Q's room. This involved Q running back and forth between his toys and me reading him books in his chair. I'm so glad he loves books!

10:00 means one thing in our house...Elmo! I turn on Sesame Street for him, and while he watches I either read, get ready, or do stuff on the computer. I do try and interact with him somewhat during his show, so its not just him plopped in front of the TV.

After SS we'll either go outside, play more inside, ,go to the gym, or if its Thursday, go to storytime at the local library. We eat lunch between 12 and 12:30, then we come back upstairs and play on "Momma nigh-nigh". That means we sit on my bed and play with his cars or just hang out. I often turn on an episode of Ellen, who Q loves! He can identify her now and always says "Ellen - dance!" Quinn loves to dance, so Ellen is right up his alley.

At 1:30 Q goes down for his nap, and I either shower, do work for Ross, watch TV, read, or clean. Usually its a mix of all of that. When Q wakes up anywhere from 4-5:30 (again, blessed) I get him up and we'll play or go outside. When I know when Ross will be home, I start dinner, depending on what we're doing. After dinner, we come back upstairs and hang out together. We aim for Q to be in bed by 8:30, which doesn't always happen. Once he's in bed, we just hang out together.

So that's it, not counting Sundays or days with special events. Not the most exciting, but hey, that's my life. And Q usually knows how to make it a little more interesting!

Quinn's Birthday and Party

Here is the long overdue post about Quinn's birthday and party. I'm sure you were on pins and needles waiting.

On his actual birthday, we went to the Magic Kingdom. I was so excited to take him, knowing he won't remember, but still excited to see his reaction. I was a bit worried about how he would do with the whole nap thing, but for special occasions I think it is okay to skip it. He did remarkably well, getting a little cranky at times, but he was so interested in what was going on around him, the crankiness usually didn't last long. He really liked the shows and parades, which really shocked me. He even remembered part of one show later when we passed the castle (he pointed to the spot where Mickey and Minnie had been standing and yelled Minnie!).

So here is (most) of his day in pictures. Enjoy!

First picture of the day - Happy Birthday Quinn!

Yummy birthday breakfast at Cracker Barrel.

His first ride at Disney World - the tram from the parking lot to the Ticket and Transportation Center

Checking out the Magic Kingdom while waiting for the boat.

In awe.

With his birthday and 1st visit buttons.

Getting ready to walk down Main St with Nana and Papa.

First real ride - on the Golden Carousel with Mama.

Ringing the bell at Pooh's Thoughtful Spot.

On the Teacups with Papa, Aunt Mere, and dad.

Ears!

Happy Birthday Ears!

Quinn LOVES Minnie!!

Me and Mere with our fancy ears!

Nana with her fancy ears, very nice indeed!

He was excited to see Mickey and Minnie, but got really shy when we went up to meet them.

Ross and I on the train.

With the Minnie dad bought him.

Meeting Eeyore at dinner.

Pooh!

I'm watching you Piglet.

I guess he would rather see Tigger's signature than the actual Tigger.

His birthday cupcake...who knew we would see it again in such a different form in such a short period of time.

He was so happy to eat his cupcake. It had been an overall good day until about 15 minutes after this picture was taken. He proceeded to vomit his entire dinner (which he had eaten quite a bit of) and the cupcake all over the table. It was not pretty, proof of which I can relive because Ross, in the midst of Quinn puking, felt the need to take a picture. For posterity's sake and all I'm sure. I felt so bad, and tried to clean it up, but was assured that this happens frequently, probably daily.

It was a great day and I can't wait to take him back. We didn't get to go on all the rides I wanted to take him on, so I hope we get to take him soon.
Quinn's party was the Saturday after his actual birthday. It turned out to be a really crappy day, which really sucked because his party was at a park. By the start time, most people had cancelled and it was really cold and rainy. Luckily the wonderful Joy Engdahl only lives a few miles from the park, so we moved the party there. Even though there weren't many people there, we had a great time.
The front of the cake, made by the wonderful Kim Spurlock.

The back of the cake. It had all the things he loved, Sesame Street characters and various modes of transportation.

Opening presents!

Eating cake with Aunt Joy!

Yay for balloons!

So Quinn is 2 and it was a great time for everyone. I can't wait to see what the next year will bring. Plenty of action, adventure, comedy, and drama, some of my favorite movie elements!

I got an award!

Well, look at that! My friend Kate passed on the Sunshine Award to me and my little blog. It makes me feel good to know that someone is reading this (besides you Mom). Kate has an absolutely adorable, sweet little girl named Lily, who Quinn is a big fan of. Her blog is a fun account of her life with Lily and I do enjoy reading it (and watching the super cute videos!).
I'm going to pass the award on to my best friend Joy and her blog. Even though her life is very different than mine, we still have a lot in common and who else can I always count on to go see weird, intellectual movies with? She is doing a lot of good in the world and that is worth a lot more than a blog award. She blogs about her life and reading goals and her future plans in Cambodia and elsewhere in the world. Check it out!

Book #2: The Time Traveler's Wife

At the beginning of the year I made a "resolution" to read 12 new books this year. As someone who used to read a lot, it pains me not to be able to do so. So I'm making the time. The first book I read this year was Superfreakonomics, which was not as good as Freakonomics, but still good and definitely interesting. I love the intersection of sociology and economics and general public interest, and both those books address those issues.

The 2nd book I finished was The Time Traveler's Wife. I did like it, but it does take some getting used to. The jumps in time can be confusing, but once you get past that, it is a good read. It is an easy read and a different kind of story. Not your typical romance or drama. There is a lot of romance and drama involved, the the way the story is woven puts a different perspective on romance and drama. I wasn't completely impressed with the author's writing style, she seemed to be trying to impress readers with her prose at times. Overall I give it a solid B.
